Prognosis

The expected outcome (prognosis) for patients who have IBD depends on the severity of the condition and the length of time the inflammation has been present.

Inflammatory bowel disease increases the risk for colorectal cancer. Regular colonoscopy (i.e., every 1 or 2 years) often is recommended to screen for this condition.
