Follow-up
After H. pylori treatment, additional tests are performed to make sure the infection and bacteria are no longer present. Breath tests or stool tests are commonly used. Blood tests are not as accurate for this purpose.
If H. pylori infection persists, physicians may prescribe another round of medication therapy with different antibiotics. In some cases, further testing procedures (e.g., endoscopy, upper GI series) are performed. If the infection is not cured after a second round of treatment, a gastroenterologist (specialist in digestive disorders) should be consulted for further testing and analysis.
