Causes

There are many causes for nausea, including the following:

  • Chemotherapy (drugs used to treat cancer)
  • Illness (e.g., stomach virus, gallbladder disease, food-borne illnesses)
  • Motion sickness
  • Nervous system disorders (e.g., vertigo, migraine)
  • Pregnancy (e.g., morning sickness)

Nausea also can occur as a result of overeating; eating certain foods; and in response to unpleasant sights, smells, or mental images.
