Treatment
Treatment for GI bleeding depends on the cause. Medications, lasers, electrocoagulation (electric current), and cauterization (heat) can be used during endoscopy to stop bleeding in the GI tract.
Once GI bleeding has been stopped, medications often are used to treat the underlying cause (e.g., H. pylori infection, ulcer) and help prevent the condition from recurring. Surgery may be used to treat some types of GI bleeding (e.g., hemorrhoids, anal fissures).
