Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of GI bleeding vary and depend on the location, cause, and severity of the condition. Bleeding from the stomach or esophagus can result in vomiting or spitting up bright red blood and dark, tar-like stools. Bleeding from the lower GI tract can produce bright red blood in the stool.
Complications associated with acute (sudden) severe GI tract bleeding include abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, and shock (low blood pressure). GI bleeding that is chronic (long lasting) can cause fatigue, lethargy, and anemia (low red blood cell count).
